An Evening of Poetry – Miia Toivio Performs at the Night of the Arts

As part of Helsinki Festival’s Night of the Arts, on Thursday 14 August from 5 to 6 pm, the museum will be filled with poetry as writer Miia Toivio presents her work. The event is part of the opening programme of the Runokuu (Poetry Moon) festival, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.

Focusing on the sonic and phonetic qualities of poetry, the performance turns toward absence, exploring echo and repetition as central poetic elements. It awakens presence, unearths echoes, and brings them to life.

The poems featured are selected from Toivio’s collections Loistaen olet, Pysty hiljaisuus, Sukupuutot, and Hukka nukka tukka. Some texts are also drawn from Suut, a collaborative work with poet Marko Niemi.

Miia Toivio (b. 1974) is a Helsinki-based poet with roots in Southern Ostrobothnia. She was awarded the Eino Leino Prize in 2021.
