The painting is a view of the Île de Sein, a small island in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Brittany. Collin made several paintings in the Breton region.
The cityscape depicts men in their everyday occupations: one carries a heavy load on his shoulder, balancing it with his hand; another pulls a small cart with a large crate. Others are just passing.
The figures in the painting are not portraits, and their individual details are not reproduced. The shadows indicate that Collin painted the view around midday.
In the 1920s, the focus of Collin’s urban views shifted from bustling scenes to deserted streets. His paintings from the decade share many elements with the modern classicist movement of the time, including the sombre colour palette and the stationary atmosphere.

Marcus Collin was one of the founders of the November Group. He did not share his peers’ bohemianism, however; although Collin did not come from an elite family, he was highly educated and trained in piano and violin, among other things. Prior to his artistic career, Collin had studied law, journalism and architecture.
Cityscapes are Collin’s most common theme. They are characterised by an interest in people and society, particularly workers.

Marcus Collin made several trips to France, where he experimented with the bright colours typical of French postimpressionism. In 1908, when Magnus Enckell was employed as commissary of the Finnish department of the Salon d’Automne,in Paris, Collin was among the young artists who were invited to appear at the Salon alongside famous painters from an older generation, such as Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Albert Edelfelt and Pekka Halonen.
Collin also travelled extensively around Europe, including St. Petersburg, Vienna and Italy. In the latter he became interested in the Italian Primitives, particularly Melozzo da Forlì and Fra Angelico.

Marcus Collin married the artist Eva Törnwall in 1916.
In the 1930s, the couple lived in the Lallukka Artists’ Home, being among the first to take up residence there on the building’s completion.

Pariisissa ollessaan Collin maalasi erityisesti pastelleilla ja vesiväreillä ja kuvasi kaupungin kaduilla tekemiään havaintoja humoristisesti. Pariisissa hän ei osallistunut taidekursseille, vaan halusi mieluummin tarkkailla elämänmenoa kaduilla.
Collin oli kiinnostunut ihmisistä, joita hän tutki osana yhteiskuntaa, ei yksittäisinä muotokuvina. Hänen maalauksensa kuvaavat elämän tavanomaisia hetkiä ja arkea. Collinin kuvaamat hahmot ovat nimettömiä. Hän oli erityisen kiinnostunut työväenluokasta, sekä pelloilla että kaupungeissa. Henkilöt näyttävät kiireisiltä. Silloinkin kun he vain kävelevät ja kulkevat ohi, he näyttävät syventyneiltä omiin ajatuksiinsa. Yleensä he katsovat maata ja jatkavat toimintaansa ilman vuorovaikutusta muiden kanssa.

ALKUPERÄINEN RIPUSTUS
Näissä 1980-luvun valokuvissa nähdään Collinin Ile de Sein -maalauksen alkuperäinen ripustus Juhani Kirpilän aikana. Maalaus ripustettiin juhlaolohuoneeseen, josta vanhimmat ja arvokkaimmat maalaukset löytyivät – ja löytyvät nykyäänkin.

Juhlaolohuone oli erityisen tärkeä tila, koska se oli Kirpilällä varattuna ystävien ja sukulaisten isännöimiseen – sillä oli julkinen tehtävä.
Värivalokuva otettiin Kirpilän 50-vuotisjuhlissa vuonna 1981. Taidekeräilijä Seppo Fränti poseeraa taulujen edessä.
